WORLD DAY OF THE POOR 2023 - ‘Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor’. Tobit 4:7 - Sunday 19th November
‘Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor’. Tobit 4:7
“These words help us to understand the essence of our witness. By reflecting on the Book of Tobit, a little-known text of the Old Testament, yet one that is charming and full of wisdom, we can better appreciate the message the sacred writer wished to communicate” Pope Francis.
We are invited to celebrate World Day of the Poor on Sunday 19 November and to make every effort at this time to create moments of encounter and friendship, solidary and concrete assistance with those who are poor. Pope Francis’ message this year is a clear call to us not to turn our face away from the poor so that God’s face will not be turned away from us. The recent Synodal Assembly message to the people of God reminds is that to progress in our discernment, the Church absolutely needs to listen to everyone, starting with the poorest. This requires a path of conversion, which is also a path of praise: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children” (Luke 10:21).

World Day of the Poor 2023 – Day of Reflection at St Rita's, Honiton 14th October 10.30-15.30
“Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tob 4:7)
All are welcome to come and spend the day at St Rita's from 10.30-15.30 to pray and reflect on Pope Francis’s message for the 7th World Day of the Poor and how we are called to respond.
We are thrilled to be joined by two thought-provoking guest speakers with national and international reputations - Jenny Sinclair, founder of Together for the Common Good and David Wells, a well-known author and popular motivational speaker from our own diocese. We are confident they will leave participants feeling uplifted.
In this year’s message, Pope Francis says ‘Let us thank the Lord that so many men and women are devoted to caring for the poor and the excluded; they are persons of every age and social status who show understanding and readiness to assist the marginalized and those who suffer. They are not superheroes but “next door neighbours”, ordinary people who quietly make themselves poor among the poor.
Join us to celebrate those who give their time to others and reflect on how we reach out the hand of welcome.
Places are limited for this FREE event so booking is advised. You can book by clicking the button below or emailing caritas@prcdtr.org.uk

Aid to the Church in Need - INDIA: Manipur Archbishop – Pray for an end to the suffering
Following the recent appeal by Steve Reidlinger from Aid to the Church in Need, as a Parish, we have been asked to pray for Christians in Manipur State, in north - east India.
Archbishop Lumon has seen his diocese at the centre of a wave of deadly attacks, He has asked for prayers “to transform the minds of the people who are led by hatred and religious violence”. He said, “the need is enormous” and “the
destruction and loss to communities and the Church is great”. Thousands of people have been displaced after their homes were destroyed.
Aid to the Church in Need doesn’t just need our generous donations, it also needs our prayers.

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly - 23rd July 2023
This year we will celebrate the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Francis in 2021 declared that this special day celebrating Grandparents and the Elderly is to be held on the fourth Sunday of July. This is close to the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

The theme this year coincides with that of World Youth Day taking place in Lisbon, Portugal, 'His mercy is from age to age' (Lk 1:50). This is taken from the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth (Lk 1:39-56), and links with the World Youth Day theme where Mary sets out to visit Elizabeth 'Mary arose and went with haste' (Lk 1:39). Pope Francis in his message to people for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly asks young people who are travelling to Lisbon, before they leave, to visit an elderly person stating that "their prayers will protect you and you will carry in your heart the blessing of that encounter. I ask you, the elderly among us, to accompany by your prayers the young people about to celebrate World Youth Day".

This year the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly falls on Sunday 23rd July. There are many ways we can celebrate this special day in our homes and parishes. We will give you some ideas to get you started on our Grandparents and the Elderly page.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols on the very first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly encouraged young people, in a short video message, to talk to their grandparents if they want to be a sign of hope for the world.

Sea Sunday - 9th July 2023
Seafarers and fishers play a vital role in all of our lives, but they often work in difficult, hazardous conditions. In the last year, more crews have been abandoned by their employers than ever before. Many are still being denied the right to leave their ships for even a short break away from the relentless noise and pressure onboard. Many are reporting more stress and poorer mental health.
Sea Sunday is Sunday 9th July. It is when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Your support will make a big difference to seafarers and fishers in need.

Please note there will be a second collection at all Masses this weekend. Or you can donate by visiting www.stellamaris.org.uk/donate, or by texting ‘SEA’ to 70460 to donate £5. This collection is vital to enable Stella Maris to continue its important work, so please give generously. Thank you.

Online Dementia Awareness Information Session – Tuesday 1st August 12 noon.
There are more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today, with 81,000 in the South West. This number is predicted to double in the next 30 years and we will see this reflected in our congregations and communities. All our parishes will know someone living with dementia or caring for someone. You will already be providing pastoral care to people living with dementia and may already be taking steps to be a dementia friendly church.
This one-hour introductory session is aimed at parish priests, secretaries, eucharistic ministers, pastoral workers and welcomers, members of SVP and all those whose lives are touched by dementia. It will focus on understanding dementia and the practical aspects of how to respond, but will also offer advice about resources to understand how to accompany those whose lives have been touched by dementia in their spiritual journey.
People are welcome to bring their lunch and listen in. You are also welcome to join as a parish group. You can register here https://forms.office.com/e/1DijnZkMQk

Mass Celebrating the Life Shop
You are cordially invited to attend Mass at St Joseph's on 5 July at 10am, and afterwards for light refreshments in the Parish Hall. People of all faiths and none have been saddened at the closure of the Life Shop in Weymouth and we've made many friends amongst the local community. The shop itself was a presence in Weymouth for 30 years, although Life Charity offered help, friendship and support for 25 years before that. We remember founder members to whom we owe gratitude for their witness in the early days and currently those for whom prayers are presently becoming the only recourse. Many lives have been changed and many lives have been saved.
