Stella Maris –  Apostleship of the Sea - Easter Egg Appeal

Please support the local Stella Maris Easter Egg Appeal by donating Easter Egg treats to seafarers in our local ports over Easter.

Stella Maris, the Catholic charity that supports Seafarers, is planning to give chocolate treats to crew aboard ships in port along the south coast over Easter.

There will be many hundreds of seafarers passing through our ports and far away from home this Easter. It can be a very lonely time for them.

The Port Chaplains are asking for any chocolate Easter Egg donations.  Please give your gifts to the Parish Office by Monday 18 March.

Thank you. Sam Newington

WORLD DAY OF THE POOR 2023 - ‘Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor’. Tobit 4:7 - Sunday 19th November

‘Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor’. Tobit 4:7

“These words help us to understand the essence of our witness. By reflecting on the Book of Tobit, a little-known text of the Old Testament, yet one that is charming and full of wisdom, we can better appreciate the message the sacred writer wished to communicate” Pope Francis.

We are invited to celebrate World Day of the Poor on Sunday 19 November and to make every effort at this time to create moments of encounter and friendship, solidary and concrete assistance with those who are poor. Pope Francis’ message this year is a clear call to us not to turn our face away from the poor so that God’s face will not be turned away from us. The recent Synodal Assembly message to the people of God reminds is that to progress in our discernment, the Church absolutely needs to listen to everyone, starting with the poorest. This requires a path of conversion, which is also a path of praise: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children” (Luke 10:21).

World Day of the Poor 2023 – Day of Reflection at St Rita's, Honiton 14th October 10.30-15.30

“Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tob 4:7)

All are welcome to come and spend the day at St Rita's from 10.30-15.30 to pray and reflect on Pope Francis’s message for the 7th World Day of the Poor and how we are called to respond.

We are thrilled to be joined by two thought-provoking guest speakers with national and international reputations  - Jenny Sinclair, founder of Together for the Common Good and David Wells, a well-known author and popular motivational speaker from our own diocese.  We are confident they will leave participants feeling uplifted.

In this year’s message, Pope Francis says ‘Let us thank the Lord that so many men and women are devoted to caring for the poor and the excluded; they are persons of every age and social status who show understanding and readiness to assist the marginalized and those who suffer. They are not superheroes but “next door neighbours”, ordinary people who quietly make themselves poor among the poor.

Join us to celebrate those who give their time to others and reflect on how we reach out the hand of welcome.

Places are limited for this FREE event so booking is advised. You can book by clicking the button below or emailing caritas@prcdtr.org.uk

Aid to the Church in Need - INDIA: Manipur Archbishop – Pray for an end to the suffering

Following the recent appeal by Steve Reidlinger from Aid to the Church in Need, as a Parish, we have been asked to pray for Christians in Manipur State, in north - east India.

Archbishop Lumon has seen his diocese at the centre of a wave of deadly attacks, He has asked for prayers “to transform the minds of the people who are led by hatred and religious violence”. He said, “the need is enormous” and “the

destruction and loss to communities and the Church is great”. Thousands of people have been displaced after their homes were destroyed.

Aid to the Church in Need doesn’t just need our generous donations, it also needs our prayers.

CAFOD Fix the Food System Campaign - Sowing the Seeds of Poverty

This weekend we are praying for your support for the next phase of CAFOD's Fix the Food System campaign.

After hearing the Gospel for the day, the 'Parable of the Sower' we will share why Salina is writing a letter to the World Bank.

We are asking you all to stand in solidarity with small-scale farmers. It’s clear that our current global food system is in crisis, and at the heart of this crisis is a struggle over control of the world’s seeds.

Please consider signing Salina's letter on your way out of Mass this weekend.

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly - 23rd July 2023

This year we will celebrate the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Francis in 2021 declared that this special day celebrating Grandparents and the Elderly is to be held on the fourth Sunday of July. This is close to the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

The theme this year coincides with that of World Youth Day taking place in Lisbon, Portugal, 'His mercy is from age to age' (Lk 1:50). This is taken from the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth (Lk 1:39-56), and links with the World Youth Day theme where Mary sets out to visit Elizabeth 'Mary arose and went with haste' (Lk 1:39). Pope Francis in his message to people for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly asks young people who are travelling to Lisbon, before they leave, to visit an elderly person stating that "their prayers will protect you and you will carry in your heart the blessing of that encounter. I ask you, the elderly among us, to accompany by your prayers the young people about to celebrate World Youth Day".

This year the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly falls on Sunday 23rd July. There are many ways we can celebrate this special day in our homes and parishes. We will give you some ideas to get you started on our Grandparents and the Elderly page.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols on the very first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly encouraged young people, in a short video message, to talk to their grandparents if they want to be a sign of hope for the world.

Sea Sunday - 9th July 2023

Seafarers and fishers play a vital role in all of our lives, but they often work in difficult, hazardous conditions. In the last year, more crews have been abandoned by their employers than ever before. Many are still being denied the right to leave their ships for even a short break away from the relentless noise and pressure onboard. Many are reporting more stress and poorer mental health.

Sea Sunday is Sunday 9th July. It is when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Your support will make a big difference to seafarers and fishers in need.

Please note there will be a second collection at all Masses this weekend. Or you can donate  by visiting www.stellamaris.org.uk/donate, or by texting ‘SEA’ to 70460 to donate £5. This collection is vital to enable Stella Maris to continue its important work, so please give generously. Thank you.

Online Dementia Awareness Information Session – Tuesday 1st August 12 noon.

There are more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today, with 81,000 in the South West. This number is predicted to double in the next 30 years and we will see this reflected in our congregations and communities.  All our parishes will know someone living with dementia or caring for someone. You will already be providing pastoral care to people living with dementia and may already be taking steps to be a dementia friendly church.

This one-hour introductory session is aimed at parish priests, secretaries, eucharistic ministers, pastoral workers and welcomers, members of SVP and all those whose lives are touched by dementia. It will focus on understanding dementia and the practical aspects of how to respond, but will also offer advice about resources to understand how to accompany those whose lives have been touched by dementia in their spiritual journey.

People are welcome to bring their lunch and listen in. You are also welcome to join as a parish group. You can register here https://forms.office.com/e/1DijnZkMQk

Mass Celebrating the Life Shop

You are cordially invited to attend Mass at St Joseph's on 5 July at 10am, and afterwards for light refreshments in the Parish Hall. People of all faiths and none have been saddened at the closure of the Life Shop in Weymouth and we've made many friends amongst the local community. The shop itself was a presence in Weymouth for 30 years, although Life Charity offered help, friendship and support for 25 years before that. We remember founder members to whom we owe gratitude for their witness in the early days and currently those for whom prayers are presently becoming the only recourse. Many lives have been changed and many lives have been saved.

Pat Shonfield Awarded The Gold Medal of Merit

Following our wonderful Paschal Triduum, Fr. Anthony was delighted to award The Gold Medal of Merit of the Archconfraternity of St Stephen, (which is the Church Guild of Altar servers) to Pat Shonfield, who has had a very long association with St Joseph's Church in Weymouth. Having being brought up in the parish, becoming an Altar Server at the age of 8 years old and faithfully serving at the altar for over 65 years!

This Medal of Merit is a well deserved recognition of that service, which he received humbly on the night.  What an amazing example to us all and especially the youngsters who now assist him and Fr Anthony at Mass by serving at the altar.

We congratulate Pat on this special occasion and thank him for all these years of faithful service and wish him many more to come.

Chrism Mass at Plymouth Cathedral

Fr. Anthony led a group of parishioners to the Chrism Mass at Plymouth Cathedral this Holy Week. The celebrant was The Right Reverend Philip Moger (who kindly stood in as Principal Celebrant travelling all the way from Southwark).

We were blessed to see Fr. Anthony renew his promises along with many other priests from all corners of the Diocese . The procession,  blessing and consecration of the sacred oils was the highlight of the trip for us all but for one of our young Altar Servers, being asked to participate, with the great honour of "looking after" the Bishop's Mitre, made his day.

Not at all overwhelmed by the occasion, he said, "it was fun"!

The tea and cake at Buckfast Abbey was appreciated by all on the journey home.

Safeguarding in the Parish

If you are involved in any form of ministry within the Parish that involves working with children or vulnerable adults, basic Safeguarding Training is mandatory. This should be updated every 3 years and can either be done online or face to face.

Life Shop Closing

The LIFE SHOP has been an established part of Weymouth for the past 30 years. Many individuals and families have been supported and our parish along with Dorchester Holy Trinity, sends goods and also volunteers to work with Life staff in the shop. It was the 3rd shop to open in the UK and in 2018 was the best performing shop in the country. It still holds the record for being the longest established shop in the UK. It is with great sadness that staff received a message from Head Office that after 5 March 2023, the lease will not be renewed and the shop will be closed. Staff would like to continue as normally as they can until that date, but will not be collecting any more donations. The LIFE Shop would like to thank parishioners, friends and supporters for their donations, prayers and good wishes

UPDATE:

Final day of trading will be 18th February by which time everything must go.

Lepra Appeal - World Leprosy Day - Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th January 2023

Please note, there will be a second collection at all masses this weekend for the World Leprosy Day appeal.

Today 600 people will be diagnosed with leprosy, more than 50 of these will be children. There is now a cure for leprosy, however, there is more work to be done as prejudice, discrimination, and lack of healthcare and resources mean not everyone can receive this in time to prevent disabilities. Lepra’s mission is to beat leprosy – so that all cases are easily diagnosed and treated and leave no disability or discrimination. Please help us beat leprosy – even the smallest contribution can help treat and rehabilitate people trapped by this disease. See Lepra.org.uk

SVP Warm Welcome - In the News

Fr Anthony was interviewed for The Pillar publication regarding the Warm Welcome initiative. As he says "even if you just get one person, that one person could be lonely or could be cold, and you’re making a difference to their day. That’s the way we look at it here: that it doesn’t matter how many people we’ve got, actually for those people this is an important place." Read the full article here

Annual Youth Award 2022

Fr. Anthony gave three young people in our Parish a Youth Award in recognition of putting their faith into action through service and reflection. Our three regular Sunday readers never fail to step up when asked and are an inspiration to other young people in the Parish.

Many congratulations to:
